"Naomi has been my yoga teacher for the last few years so when I was pregnant for the second time and I found out she would be qualifying as a doula a month before I was due I was thrilled. As a yoga teacher she is very caring and connects on a deep level with her students so I had no doubt that she would be a great doula.
First time around I had a very long and difficult labour so I believed very strongly that the presence of a third person would be very beneficial not just for me but also for my partner. Naomi was wonderful throughout those last few weeks. She made herself available to me whenever I needed to talk, gave me lots of useful literature to read regarding birth, came and met my partner where we got to discuss our expectations and anxieties. She gave me breathing and visualisation exercises which I found really helpful and calming.
During labour she was incredibly supportive and nurturing, breathed with me and massaged my back, allowed my partner to rest when he needed and to answer questions that hospital staff were directing at me at various times. (When you are in labour you do not want to be asked your name and date of birth!). Overall I found her presence very maternal and comforting.
The first couple of weeks after I gave birth we were able to discuss how the birth went and how my partner and I were both feeling which again was very helpful. Naomi was a wonderful doula and made my labour much more manageable. I couldn't have done it without her."

Doulas are women specially trained to give emotional and practical support during pregnancy, labour, birth and the postnatal period. This support has been shown to lead to more satisfying and empowered experiences, and a decrease in interventions, caesarean sections, postnatal depression and an increase in breastfeeding success.
More and more women and couples are choosing to have doula support.
As a doula I will assist you and your partner in achieving your desired birth experience and prepare you for your new arrival. I am there to make you aware of your options available and create your own informed birth choices, listen to your concerns, as well as providing a calm and reassuring presence for you and your partner through birth. My attitude is non-judgemental, I am there to support you at your birth. Every birth is different, every woman is unique and my role is to support you personally.
Medical research has shown time and again the importance of emotional support during labour and birth to enhance our experience of birth as well as positively influence the birth outcome and support the bonding process. Nevertheless, the great technological advances in the obstetric field in the last century have mainly focused on the physical safety and pain relief of the labouring woman, leaving her, the baby and father often with very little emotional support.
Research has shown that having a doula present at a birth :
* Shortens first-time labour by an average of 2 hours
* Decreases the chance of caesarean section by 50%
* Decreases the need for pain medication
* Helps fathers participate with confidence
* Increases success in breast-feeding
